Acid Washed Tin | Kirby Fredendall
These acid-washed tin landscape paintings explore the interplay of light, color, and texture—particularly within watery landscapes—and how these elements shape mood. Using tin as a ground allows the action of acid on the metal to echo the movement of water itself, as it travels across a smooth surface.
The resulting acid-washed tin creates a fluid, reflective ground for the oil-painted landscape image, which is built through layered glazes. Rather than depicting a specific location, each painting evokes a remembered watery landscape—one shaped by color, light, and movement, and formed through the combined actions of the acid wash and the painterly surface.
